Varec Biogas™

Burners & Flares

Excess biogas must be flared to avoid nuisance odors or explosion hazards.

Varec Biogas understands the importance of occupational health and safety of your employees. We’ve designed burners and flares that meet the most stringent air quality requirements while ensuring efficient operation and maintenance costs.

Biogas is produced during the anaerobic digestion process and generates an energy source that can be captured and used in various ways or safely disposed. The biogas often has a fluctuating flow and BTU value.

The 239A Series is suitable for burning low volumes of biogas generated in the anaerobic digestion process. This helps reduce the potential of odour nuisance from venting directly to the atmosphere. The 240 H-O-A Manual Ignition System is recommended when an automatic pilot re-ignition is required along the 239A Series. The compact ignition system is inside a
weatherproof or explosion-proof enclosure and offers easy maintenance and operation.

How It Works

A ring type pilot line mixes gas with air while a baffle directs the biogas flow across the pilot flame located on top of the ring. This creates a curtain of flame where biogas is ignited. As waste gas flow rate fluctuates, the air volume can be adjusted manually through a shutter located at the bottom of the burner shroud.

Design Features

  • 304SS pilot orifices
  • Separable mounting base
  • UL approved NEMA 4/ 4x control panels

Designed to burn biogas safely and efficiently over a wide range of operating parameters, the 244E Series guarantees a destruction removal efficiency (DRE) in excess of 99 percent with low NOx and CO emissions. With no visible flame, complicated control systems or motorized dampers, the 244E Series is an easy and reliable system in terms of operation and maintenance.

How It Works

The 244E Series is not a time and temperature-based flare. It uses an innovative stack design to naturally induce the proper amount of combustion air to guarantee the high DRE. This design
eliminates the need for heat shields, refractory lining and insulation since cooling air is naturally induced in the stack section openings

Design Features

  • Infinite turn down ratio – The design allows biogas combustion without limiting the gas flow range
  • UL Certified NEMA 4, 4X, and 7 panel

Designed to provide a reliable flare and ignition system even in extreme climate conditions, the 244W Series is ideal for burning excess biogas while allowing routine maintenance to be executed without exposing the operator to high temperatures.

How It Works

Installed away from the flare stack, the 244W Series Waste Gas Burner & Ignition System uses a patented pilot ignition system that mixes pilot gas and air at ground level to provide a robust, high temperature pilot. The design is such that it is not affected by fluctuations in waste gas flow or heat content and a shielded thermocouple provides reliable detection of the pilot.

Design Features

  • The 244WG is designed to efficiently burn biogas with the use of low-pressure biogas for pilot fuel (10” < pilot gas pressure < 14” WC) without requiring blower-assisted fuel or air.
  • The 244WL can utilise biogas, natural gas, or propane at pressures as low as 10″ WC. Its ignition system doesn’t require a straight pilot gas piping which provides greater flexibility as it allows the use of 45 degree elbows.
